A good podcast host is passionate about the topic of their podcast, and it is this enthusiasm that drives us to create content we believe the world needs. However, you might be less passionate about promoting your show, and that’s ok.
If you fall into this category, then this episode is for you!
In this episode of Mics to Millions, Elizabeth Cush, host of Awaken Your Wise Woman and a therapist and coach for women in midlife, sits down with host Sam Brake Guia to discuss how she’s driven clients to her business using her podcast.
She shares how she’s managed to carry this out despite initially feeling imposter syndrome and even now advocating that she’s “still probably not the best marketer.”
Podcasting has a bigger impact than you might think
“Will anyone be listening?” might be a question you ask yourself when starting out. A question that might plant seeds of doubt and worry. But fear not because, as Elizabeth demonstrates, your podcast stands to have a greater impact than you might ever expect.
“I was amazed at how it seemed like right off the bat, people would say, ’ Oh, my gosh, I heard this episode, and this is why I’m reaching out to you for therapy.’ I was not very good at promoting it. It felt sort of like I had a lot of impostor syndrome around that. How can I be a podcaster? I’m too old. And so it took me a while to really own it and put it out there.” says Elizabeth.
She adds, “But the response that I’ve gotten and the impact on my business, the number of clients that say, ’ I heard you on another podcast, or I listened to this episode and knew that I had to work with you.’ And so that’s really gratifying and pretty amazing.”
Promoting your podcast doesn’t always come naturally
While it might look easy for some, not every podcast host takes like a duck to water when promoting their show. Give yourself time and patience to adapt, and recognize that it’s a process that will get smoother in time.
As Elizabeth says, “I think I’ve gotten better systems in place to promote it, but I would say I’m still probably not the best marketer. “I think I’m more comfortable with talking about it myself now because I do feel somewhat like a veteran after doing it for so long, so it’s gotten easier to talk about it.”

Outsourcing can reduce stress and make your process smoother
When starting your podcast, it’s understandable if resources are limited and you end up juggling a lot of responsibilities. But, as Elizabeth advocates, it’s also important to outsource the work that you struggle with to an expert as soon as you can.
For Elizabeth, that meant outsourcing the editing. “I came into it without any experience at all, and so having to learn it and then do it myself, and it has a lot of stress and time and energy. That made it that much harder. And I think there’s part of me that wishes I had outsourced it sooner.”
Guesting on other podcasts can introduce you to new audiences and keep podcasting fun
If you’re a fan of Mics to Millions, you’ve already learned that podcast guesting can be a great way of getting you in front of new audiences, given the number of hosts that have spoken on this subject before.
One of the benefits of podcast guesting is the ability to show off the diversity of your knowledge and have some fun in the process.
“So the people listening to a podcast that I’m guesting on may not know anything about me or may just have a whole different interest. But then hearing me talk about my work or whatever topic we’ve picked for the conversation broadens my reach for one.”
“Each conversation is different. I know what I want to talk about in my episodes. But to enter into someone else’s realm and whatever the focus of their podcast is, it’s great! I enjoy having that experience and being the guest versus having to control the conversation in some way.”
